Dr Aphra | Star Wars comics

002

Aphra can't believe she's in this situation. Everything about it screams stupidity and while they'd promised payment, she's positive that she's not getting paid nearly enough for this. She's hungry, tired, and filthy, not to mention crouching behind a rock, hoping that squelching noise from under the knee she's resting her weight on is mud and not something worse, blaster raised and ready to fire should one of the shaggy-furred animals seeming grazing several meters away show signs of noticing her.

"There aren't even any interesting ruins on this planet," she complains quietly to herself. "If I have to be stuck here, there could at least be some ancient weapon to discover." Instead it was a complete waste of her time.

Sweat runs down her side under her shirt. Her blaster hand shakes with fatigue. Then the mud under her knee squelches again and somehow that's the final straw.

"Why is it," she asks, her voice much louder now, "that I'm apparently the only one here smart enough to know that when something seems too good to be true, it usually is?" Aphra's also smart enough to know that speaking loudly will probably cause at least the nearest animal to attack. She's hoping for it. Right now, she could really use something to shoot.

No one makes a living breaking into abandoned research facilities if they're easily spooked and Aphra's no exception. Sure, she might have a few more reasons to be jumpy now, a few little things like one of the scariest people in the galaxy on her tail, but she doubts he could find her way out here. She doesn't believe in ghosts and she's always been good at getting out of trouble, so when she starts hearing things, she doesn't panic. She looks around, slow and careful, then when she doesn't see anything, she shrugs and keeps going.

Of course, while she might not panic easily, she also hasn't gotten this far by ignoring her instincts. She might act like as though she's decided the noises and the creeping sensation of being watched were all in her imagination, but she stays alert, ready for anything.

Or so she thinks. She doesn't expect someone to punch through the bulkhead and she definitely doesn't expect it to be someone she knew - at least, the remnants of them. Only her reflexes let her scramble backwards in time to avoid the first attack.

She draws her blaster and fires, then starts running down the hallway, looking for cover and cursing in every language she could think of. "Where's an assassin droid when you really need one?"

[Wildcard. Have something else in mind? Go for it! Maybe she's trying to take apart part of the ship or spending time in the bar or whatever.]
